Brigach is well placed: you are quickly in the High Black Forest, but just as quickly back in the quiet. The village itself is known as one of the sources of the Danube – the river Brigach flows past here and, together with the Breg near Donaueschingen, forms the beginning of the great river. St. Georgen was once the capital of the record player: the Dual and Perpetuum Ebner brands were born here. The museum on Bärenplatz tells the story of sound recording from the horn gramophone to the hi-fi system – with many machines that still actually play. A lovely afternoon when it rains.

The local hill of St. Georgen and our tip for your first evening. From the top the whole town lies below you in its basin, with forest to the horizon beyond. The climb is short and easily managed with children – at its best at sunset.

The Brigach, which flows past our village, meets the Breg at Donaueschingen – from here the river is called the Danube. There is a local saying: "Brigach and Breg bring the Danube on its way." In the palace park you can also see the formal Danube spring. A pleasant outing with a piece of geography you usually only know from an atlas.

Germany's best-known waterfalls: the Gutach drops around 163 metres over seven cascades. A well-built path leads up alongside the falls with viewpoints along the way. Afterwards you can go and look at cuckoo clocks in Triberg. Sturdy shoes are worth it – the steps can be damp.

At 1,493 metres, the highest summit in Germany outside the Alps. The top is open and wide – in clear weather the view reaches the Alps. In summer it is superb hiking country, with the Feldberg-Steig as the classic route; in winter it is the region's largest ski area. A gondola takes you up if you would rather not walk.

The most famous lake in the Black Forest, ringed by forest. An easy path runs all the way round the shore, pedalos and rowing boats are out on the water, and in summer you can swim. The village itself is touristy and busy – if you prefer things quieter, walk round to the far side of the lake or drive on to the Schluchsee.

The largest lake in the Black Forest and considerably quieter than the Titisee. Around 18 kilometres of shoreline path invite walking and cycling, and there are lawns for sunbathing, a lido and sailing boats. If you want to spend a whole day by the water, this is the place.

A narrow, mossy gorge with small waterfalls, spanned by the mighty Ravenna viaduct of the Höllental railway. The trail through the gorge is one of the loveliest short walks in the region. In Advent a well-known Christmas market is held beneath the viaduct – tickets are required for that.

A water-powered sawmill from 1825, deep in a narrow, shady wooded ravine. Its two great waterwheels still turn. The shop sells Black Forest specialities and there is a café with cake next door. A short but very atmospheric stop on the way to Furtwangen.

The birthplace of the Black Forest clock and the country's most important horological museum. From the plain wooden-geared farmhouse clock through the world-famous cuckoo clock to the atomic clock, it is all gathered here – some 8,000 objects. If you want to understand why clocks came to be built in this particular corner of the world, this is the place.

Original Black Forest farmhouses from several centuries, dismantled and rebuilt here – complete with mills, workshops, gardens and animals. You walk through genuine farm parlours and get a very vivid picture of how people once lived and worked here. Especially good with children; allow several hours for the full circuit.

One of the best-preserved medieval town layouts in south-west Germany: an almost complete town wall, three mighty gate towers and a cross of streets dating from the 12th century. Plus cafés, shops and the minster. Good for an afternoon stroll – and the nearest proper town for shopping.

One of Germany's most spectacular railway lines runs right past St. Georgen: between Offenburg and Villingen, 39 tunnels and numerous viaducts climb almost 650 metres. Simply board at St. Georgen and let the train carry you towards Triberg and Hornberg – you can leave the car behind.

The unofficial capital of the Black Forest: a young university city with its immense Gothic minster, the famous "Bächle" streamlets running through the lanes and a daily market on Münsterplatz. A full day trip, and well worth it – most relaxing by train from St. Georgen.

Around Brigach and St. Georgen there is a dense network of waymarked circular routes through forest and across meadows – from a short after-work loop to a full day's walk. The Westweg, the famous long-distance trail from Pforzheim to Basel, runs within easy reach. Hiking maps of the area are waiting for you in the apartment.

The central Black Forest is cycling country: long forest roads for easy touring, technical trails for mountain bikers and the well-signposted Black Forest Cycle Route. If you are not bringing your own bike, there are rental outlets in St. Georgen and Villingen, including e-bikes – a very sensible choice given the gradients here.
Cross-country tracks from St. Georgen · Feldberg approx. 1 hr
St. Georgen lies at around 800 metres, so the snow stays. There are prepared cross-country tracks and small lifts right here, ideal for families and cross-country skiers. For downhill skiing, head to the Feldberg, the largest ski area in the region. For sledging, the slope behind the house is often quite enough.

Do not drive far on the day you arrive. A walk from the apartment towards the forest is quite enough to settle in – and for sunset the short climb to the Roßberg, with its view over St. Georgen, is well worth it.
